Ann has had a hard life. Raised in a home with 7 siblings, a dad who works as a watchman, and a mother who is unemployed. Life has been very difficult for her and her family.
She is 20 years old and had her baby at 19. This was a huge blow to her and her poor family. You see, she is the second born and her younger siblings require upkeep including school fees.
She sat for her KCSE exams while pregnant but has never picked her certificates due to fees arrears.
When we first met her last year, she was going through depression. The experience of early childbirth, rejection from the biological father, and stigma from society left her suffering from low self-esteem and a state of hopelessness.
Rotary club of Ongata Rongai partnered with Birth and Beyond and Ark Counseling and Wellness Services are offering support to Ann and other teen mums to help bring back their self-esteem.
At the beginning of this year, the Rotary club of Ongata Rongai enrolled her in Vicodec Training Institute where she’s pursuing a course in automobile mechanics.
Been the only girl in a class of males, she has been performing exceptionally well leading the class.
Rotarian Njeri Kimuhu caught up with her recently and was surprised by her transformation. She is slowly building her self-esteem and is looking elegant and radiant.
When she asked her how she was doing, this is what she had to say: “Mum, sina stress siku hizi, natarajia mazuri kule mbele” (mum, I don’t have stress, I’m hopeful for the future).
This is just one of the success stories that the Rotary club of Ongata Rongai is supporting amongst a few more cases.
There are many teenage mothers who need a second chance, but we as a club are limited on the funding and it’s our appeal to partner with us in giving another girl a second chance.
